Ayurveda for Cervical Spondylosis & Neck Pain
Cervical spondylosis is a degenerative condition affecting the cervical vertebrae, intervertebral discs and surrounding structures. Common complaints include neck pain, stiffness, restricted movement, pain radiating toward the shoulder or arm, headache, tingling or numbness.
Ayurveda does not describe modern “cervical spondylosis” under one exact diagnostic name. Depending on the symptoms, it may be understood through concepts such as मन्यास्तम्भ (Manyāstambha – stiffness of the neck) and other Vāta-predominant musculoskeletal disorders.
Manyāstambha
A classical reference in Suśruta Saṃhitā, Nidānasthāna 1/67 states:
दिवास्वप्नासनस्थानविवृताध्वनिरीक्षणैः ।
मन्यास्तम्भं प्रकुरुते स एव श्लेष्मणाऽऽवृतः ॥
Meaning: Vāta, when obstructed by Kapha, can produce Manyāstambha, characterized principally by stiffness and restricted movement of the neck.
This gives an important Ayurvedic framework: Vāta contributes to pain and degenerative features, while Kapha may contribute to heaviness and stiffness.
Vāta and Asthi Dhātu
Ayurveda describes a close relationship between Vāta Doṣa and Asthi Dhātu (bone tissue):
अस्थि मारुतयोर्नैवं प्रायो वृद्धिर्हि तर्पणात् ।
श्लेष्मणा अनुगते तस्मात् संक्षयस्तद्विपर्ययात् ॥
The broader Ayurvedic principle is that Vāta and Asthi have an inverse relationship in many clinical situations. Therefore, age-related degeneration, dryness, pain, cracking and restricted movement are often assessed from a Vāta–Asthi perspective.
This does not mean that every cervical X-ray change is simply “Vāta.” Ayurvedic diagnosis considers the patient's constitution, digestion, strength, age, symptoms and associated Doṣas.
Common Aggravating Factors
Modern lifestyle can aggravate neck problems through prolonged mobile-phone use, computer work, poor sitting posture, unsuitable pillows, repetitive neck strain, lack of movement and previous injury.
From an Ayurvedic perspective, irregular routine, excessive exertion, inadequate rest, cold exposure and other Vāta-provoking habits may further aggravate pain and stiffness.

Ayurvedic Management Principles
The treatment is individualized. The principal objectives are to pacify aggravated Vāta, reduce stiffness, support comfortable movement and address associated Doṣa involvement.
Abhyanga
Gentle application and massage with appropriately selected medicated oil may be advised in suitable patients.
Classical Ayurveda emphasizes Snehana (oleation) as an important approach in Vāta disorders. In clinical practice, oils such as Kṣīrabala Taila, Mahānārāyaṇa Taila, Dhanvantaram Taila or other preparations may be selected according to the patient.
Oil selection and massage technique should be individualized; vigorous massage is not appropriate for every neck condition.
Swedana
Swedana (therapeutic fomentation) may be used after Snehana when clinically appropriate. Gentle warmth can help with muscular tightness and stiffness.
Different Ayurvedic forms of Swedana may be selected depending upon whether pain, stiffness, swelling or other features predominate.
Greeva Basti
Greeva Basti is a commonly used contemporary Ayurvedic procedure in which comfortably warm medicated oil is retained over the cervical region for a prescribed duration.
It may be incorporated into an Ayurvedic treatment program for neck pain and stiffness. However, it should not be described as a guaranteed cure or as a procedure that reverses structural cervical degeneration.
Nasya
Nasya has an important place in the Ayurvedic management of disorders affecting the region above the clavicle.
Aṣṭāṅga Hṛdaya, Sūtrasthāna 20/16 mentions:
The verse specifically includes Manyāstambha among conditions in which Nasya is discussed.
Nasya is a therapeutic procedure requiring proper assessment of Doṣa, age, strength, season and contraindications. Therapeutic Nasya should therefore be undertaken under qualified Ayurvedic supervision.
Ayurvedic Medicines
Depending on the clinical assessment, an Ayurvedic physician may consider herbs or formulations involving:
अश्वगन्धा (Aśvagandhā) – traditionally used as a strengthening and Vāta-balancing herb.
बला (Balā) – used traditionally in Vāta disorders and restorative treatment.
(Daśamūla) – an important classical group of ten roots used in various Vāta-associated conditions.
(Guggulu) preparations – selected classical formulations may be considered for particular musculoskeletal presentations.
These are not universal prescriptions for cervical spondylosis. The correct formulation, dose, duration and adjuvant depend on the individual. Self-medication—especially with herbo-mineral formulations—is best avoided.
Diet
A Vāta-pacifying dietary approach may favor warm, freshly prepared and easily digestible meals, adequate fluids and regular meal timings.
Excessively cold food and drinks, prolonged fasting or highly irregular eating patterns may be reduced when they aggravate Vāta-related symptoms.
The diet should ultimately be adapted to the patient's Agni (digestive capacity), Prakṛti, Doṣa involvement and other medical conditions.
Lifestyle & Neck Care
Good daily habits are particularly important in cervical problems.
Keep the mobile phone nearer eye level rather than repeatedly bending the neck downward. Position the computer monitor appropriately, maintain comfortable sitting posture and take regular movement breaks during prolonged desk work.
Use a pillow that keeps the cervical spine comfortable rather than forcing the neck into excessive flexion or extension.
Gentle neck and shoulder mobility exercises, physiotherapy or appropriately selected Yoga may complement Ayurvedic treatment.
Avoid forceful neck rotations, sudden jerks and aggressive cervical manipulation, especially when pain radiates into the arm or neurological symptoms are present.

Integrative Approach
Ayurveda can be combined thoughtfully with posture correction, physiotherapy, appropriate exercise, ergonomic modification and conventional medical evaluation.
Cervical spondylosis is a structural diagnosis, whereas Manyāstambha is an Ayurvedic clinical concept. The two should therefore be correlated carefully rather than treated as identical diseases.
Seek prompt medical assessment if neck pain is accompanied by:
- Progressive weakness of the hand or arm
- Persistent or increasing numbness
- Difficulty holding objects or loss of hand coordination
- Problems with walking or balance
- Bowel or bladder disturbance
- Severe pain following an accident or fall
- Fever with significant neck pain
- Unexplained weight loss or rapidly worsening symptoms
These features may indicate nerve or spinal-cord involvement and should not be managed solely with home remedies.
Conclusion
Ayurveda offers a comprehensive framework for neck pain through concepts such as Manyāstambha, Vāta Doṣa and Asthi Dhātu. Therapies such as Snehana, Swedana, Nasya and appropriately selected external treatments, together with individualized medicines, diet and lifestyle correction, may form part of an integrative management plan.
The most effective approach is व्यक्ति-विशेष चिकित्सा — individualized treatment: understanding the patient's Doṣa, strength, digestion, age, symptoms and modern medical diagnosis before selecting therapy.
