The Beta-Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (Beta-hCG) test measures the concentration of the beta subunit of hCG in the blood. This hormone is primarily produced by the developing placenta shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus.

Purpose & Clinical Use

• Early Pregnancy Detection: Detects pregnancy as early as 8–10 days after conception, before a home urine test can.

• Monitoring Pregnancy Health: Tracks hormone doubling (typically every 48–72 hours in early pregnancy) to assess gestational progress and fetus viability.

• Identifying Complications: Helps diagnose ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, or evaluate potential miscarriage risk.

• Tumor Marker: Monitors gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) and certain hCG-secreting cancers (e.g., testicular or ovarian germ cell tumors) in non-pregnant individuals.

Test Types & Details

• Quantitative Test (Serum): Measures the exact concentration of hCG in mIU/mL. Useful for tracking progression over time.

• Qualitative Test (Blood/Urine): Provides a simple positive (yes) or negative (no) result.

• Specimen: Venous blood sample.

• Preparation: No fasting required. High doses of biotin supplements (>5 mg/day) should be paused prior to testing as they can interfere with immunoassay results.

Interpreting Results

• Non-Pregnant / Male: Typically < 5 mIU/mL.

• Normal Early Pregnancy: Rapidly rising levels that peak near the end of the first trimester.

• Lower Than Expected: May indicate a miscalculated conception date, an ectopic pregnancy, or potential pregnancy loss.

• Higher Than Expected: May suggest miscalculated dates, a multiple pregnancy (twins/triplets), or a molar pregnancy.
